HOW WE OPERATE
Bean On Bar uses Context Scores to show whether a listing gives enough information to make a better coffee decision. These pages hold us to the same standard: how the service runs, what happens to your data, and what our signals do and don't claim.
01 — TERMS OF SERVICE
By using the Service you agree to these terms. They are short because the architecture does most of the protecting for us.
The core of Bean On Bar — bag recognition, recipe guidance, and your coffee notebook — runs on your device. Network sync and hosted infrastructure are optional, user-initiated extensions, never a requirement to use the core features.
The Service is currently free during its development phase. Paid tiers may be introduced later. If pricing changes, your saved beans, tasting notes, and brewing profiles should remain easy to export in open formats such as JSON or CSV.
Bean On Bar's designs, scoring approach, and interface remain our property. Coffee facts entered by users or parsed from packaging — origins, varieties, processes — should be treated as descriptive product information. In return, we ask that you do not run automated scrapers or resource-heavy requests against the Service's infrastructure.
Bean On Bar does not sell paid placements, sponsored score boosts, or ad-network tracking. If paid features are introduced later, they should support useful workflows without changing how a bean’s context is scored or limiting access to your own coffee notes.
Community reports must be truthful, relevant, and based on information the contributor is entitled to share. Do not upload copied product photography, substantial marketing copy, private information, or misleading availability claims. Reports may be reviewed, corrected, expired, rejected, or removed before or after publication.
Bean On Bar may link to a cafe or roaster's own website to help users confirm a coffee or purchase directly. Unless expressly stated, Bean On Bar receives no commission or payment for these links. Availability, price, delivery, product quality, and the purchase itself remain between the user and the linked business.
02 — SOURCE & LISTINGS POLICY
Bean On Bar may index limited factual information from configured public cafe and roaster pages. The aim is discovery and direct referral, not replacing the original source.
Configured sources may be checked for factual product details such as coffee name, roaster, origin, producer, variety, process, roast profile, public price, pack size, stated availability, source URL, product image URL where it passes automated review, and the time observed. We do not intentionally reproduce full creative descriptions, customer reviews, or page design.
BeanOnBarBot accesses only configured, publicly available pages without bypassing logins, CAPTCHAs, paywalls, or access controls. It identifies itself, checks robots.txt, uses conservative schedules and bounded requests, and stops collecting from a source marked inactive or opted out.
Automatically extracted records are staged for review and are not presented as verified cafe information by default. Public listings retain a direct source link, observation time, freshness window, and source label. A product offered on a website is described as available online, sold out, or unknown; it is not labelled “on bar” unless that separate claim has suitable evidence.
Coffee offerings change quickly. Listings expire unless refreshed and should be confirmed with the linked cafe or roaster before travelling or purchasing. Cafe owners, roasters, and users can request a correction when information is outdated, incomplete, or wrongly attributed.
A cafe or roaster may claim its listing, supply an update, ask us to pause automated checks, hide product images, or request removal at no cost. Reasonable identity or authority checks may be required to protect the business from unauthorised changes. Approved opt-out and removal requests are applied to the configured source and future collection.
Cafe, roaster, coffee, and product names belong to their respective owners and are used for factual identification. A listing or source link does not imply partnership, verification, affiliation, endorsement, or sponsorship unless Bean On Bar says so explicitly.
03 — PRIVACY & DATA
Designed around a simple principle: keep personal coffee memories local unless a user chooses features that need sharing or sync.
By default, your tasting logs, scorecards, saved coffees, and bag-photo OCR stay in your browser. The app is designed to read labels locally rather than upload coffee-bag images to a server for the core workflow.
Backup and restore are file-based. Bean On Bar creates a local export that you choose where to save through your device's own sharing or download tools; it does not silently write to iCloud, Google Drive, or a private server.
Features that need a server — cross-device sync, community bean discovery, public reviews — collect only minimal account identifiers used to keep your sync permissions straight. Anything you explicitly post to the public community becomes shared, non-exclusive community knowledge that helps others buy and brew better. We do not sell your consumption patterns, trade your location history, or run advertising trackers.
You can request deletion from any sync services we operate, check what account data is held, and export your own records where export tools are available. Community posts may remain visible where they have already been shared publicly, but we will provide a correction or removal path for reasonable requests.
04 — SCORING & FAIR USE
Transparent scoring only works if its limits are just as transparent.
Context Scores describe how much useful information is visible in a bag, listing, or public source: provenance, process, roast/freshness context, price, weight, and tasting-note specificity. They are not objective statements of quality, value, safety, or how a coffee will taste in your setup.
Cup of Excellence, Coffee Review, user-cited links, SCA-style cupping scores, and roaster-stated notes may appear as attributed badges. They do not inflate the Context Score, and uncited marketing language is not presented as an independent review.
Where a roast date is not published — common for cafe retail shelves, where the actual bag may vary — Bean On Bar may show an estimated retail freshness window when the listing appears current. This is always labelled as an estimate and never treated as a printed roast date.
A lower Context Score means the visible source gives less usable context — not that the coffee, roaster, or cafe is bad. Bean On Bar does not calculate aggregate roaster or cafe rankings. Roasters and cafes can request correction or removal where data is outdated, incomplete, wrongly attributed, or no longer wanted in the public directory.
Roaster names, blend names, and packaging text shown in Bean On Bar belong to their respective owners. They are used to help users identify coffees and do not imply partnership, affiliation, or endorsement unless clearly stated.
